A balanced approach needed over drugs innovation

David Shaywitz and Nassim Taleb ("Drug research needs serendipity", July 30) see a match between agile innovators that provide cutting-edge research and pharma companies that can bring this research into the market by orchestrating the entire process. While this kind of arrangement may seem promising at first sight, there is a major caveat.

As the studies on balancing exploratory and exploitative innovation suggest, once a pharma company cuts down on exploratory research, it may become difficult for it to embrace outsourced innovation. The reasons are relatively simple. First, it is difficult to estimate viable options without a thorough understanding of the research; and second, it may be impossible to proceed with the next phase of research without previous practical experience.

As a result, successful pharma companies will have to stay balanced in their use of in-house and outsourced innovation.
