Seeing the possibilities of online environment

Published in Blog by GloStra Team

The old ways of disseminating and producing information are rapidly changing. The traditional fields, like academic research, are moving slower but the changes are inevitable. During the summer I did research on this phenomenon. The first report considers new possibilities to disseminate academic work. Many universities are already utilizing the methods presented in this report. My greatest concern is that the Helsinki University of Technology will fall behind in the development, therefore not utilizing all the possibilities to promote academic work.

Also, how we understand the principles and ethics of information creation are changing. The phenomenon called Web 2.0, social software, has spread to many companies of different sizes. Universities are also starting to see the possibilities of the new ways of Internet; blogs, wikis, RSS and mashups. This is a field that enables a lot of innovation and can easily be experimented in different situations. The main advantages of these tools are improved communication, enhanced collaboration and effectively.

The reports are also accessible from http://diemopen.pbwiki.com If you find these issues interesting, I also recommend Chris Anderson's book "The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More", which is also available as an audiobook. Although it concentrates mostly on entertainment business, I found a lot of analogies between my reports and the book.
