Wiki

Glostra Wiki -screenshotGlostra Wiki's main objective is to promote collaboration between researchers and all interest groups of the research community. The wiki provides a platform for Glostra researchers to plan and execute projects collaboratively, enhancing idea sharing, information flow and, probably most importantly, cuts back on excessive email usage. When used correctly, the wiki pages are always up-to-date, containing only the newest versions of drafts. Thus, the wiki prevents time-consuming mix-ups and removes the need to wait for others to send back their revisions on the drafts you are working on collaboratively.

Another long-term objective is to compose an extensive online strategy "book" into the wiki. The book aims to function as a tool for management decision-making, providing easy-to-find, up-to-date information, structured to best suit management use. Students will also be encouraged to use the wiki-book for innovative learning.

At the moment, Glostra Wiki contains a recent project on the Web 2.0 phenomenon, and its impact on the business and academic worlds. The new tools transforming our dear web, making the user a key player in content generation and categorization, also present great opportunities for companies to enhance their operations. By a smart introduction of wikis, blogs, tagging systems and other social software, organizations can considerably promote both their internal and external information flows, collaboration between different parties, information findability and the hugely important creation of social ties and networks, essential to all knowledge workers. Glostra also has a wiki space in the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) wiki. After initial trials the official recommendation is to use this wiki as the main tool for collaboration, as the TKK wiki software (Atlassian Confluence) provides more means to secure and protect the works. The main reason for building a wiki of our own in the first place was to gain more freedom with mainly visual appearances of the wiki site. However, the functionality of the MediaWiki software did not quite reach our expectations, so the decision to switch over to TKK wiki was made. Confluence is a great, easy-to-use wiki software, designed for heavy enterprise usage - perfect for Glostra that is!
